Volkswagen has been on a journey towards electrifying its portfolio with its ID brand of electric cars and now the latest entrants are the new ID.5 RWD and ID.5 GTX AWD which is the sportier of the two. These are crossover coupes that will first launch in Europe in early 2022 and then will likely even land up in the US. The ID.5 naturally is positioned above the ID.4 and is also built on the MEB platform which Volkswagen has developed in-house.

It has a sloping roofline that arches across the top of the car in a very aerodynamic way giving the ID.5 a drag coefficient of 0.26. The GTX model gets a slightly higher drag coefficient of 0.27 which remains lower than that of the ID.4. The ID.5 gets a 77 kWh battery pack which enables a range of 520 kilometers in the RWD WLTP certified avatar. It gets a singular battery choice but three powertrain options, a 169.6 bhp option that offers 310 Nm of torque, one with 198 bhp with the same amount of torque.

The top of the line GTX model gets more grunt with a 290 bhp output and a higher top speed of 180 kilometers per hour which is 20 kilometers per hour more than the standard models. It can do 0-100 kph in 6.3 seconds. There are plenty of charging options available as well - 11 kW and DC quick charging at up to 135 kW. It can get charged in 30 minutes offering a range of 390 km in the standard ID.5 and 320 km in the GTX model.

The GTX model also has a slightly lower range of 480 km but then again it is the faster car and it gets all-weather capability. There are other upgrades in the GTX - sportier bumpers with integrated DRLs at the front, IQ. Light LED matrix headlamps, LED tail light clusters with a 3D design and dual-tone paints, and a performance-themed cockpit.
Despite being a crossover coupe VW has revealed that the ID.5 has a bigger trunk than the ID.4. At 549 liters but the total capacity is slightly less at 1,561 liters when the rear seats are folded.
This car also comes with the latest software, which VW in its boring way calls software generation 3.0 which supports over-the-air updates, augmented reality via the heads-up display, some levels of automated driving with ADAS, and many connected car tricks like travel assist, ID and Light and more.
