Unveiled earlier in the month, the Volkswagen Virtus is set to be the brand's most accessible sedan in India. The car will replace the outgoing Vento, but is much bigger in proportions, as well as feature rich. Based on VW's MQB A0 IN platform, this is Volkswagen's second product under the India 2.0 project, following the Volkswagen Taigun compact SUV. Just over 3 weeks after its global debut, Volkswagen has announced that it has commenced the production of the Virtus in its Chakan Plant in Pune.

Commenting on the announcement, Piyush Arora, Managing Director of Skoda Auto & Volkswagen India Pvt. Ltd. said, "The development of the carline is a joint effort of our global and Indian teams who have worked dedicatedly towards retaining the global manufacturing standards of the brand while maintaining localisation levels of up to 95%"

Interior of the Volkswagen Virtus looks very modern and has body coloured panels running across the dash and on the door panels.
"The New Virtus is built to perfection for aspirational Indian customers and with the start of production, we are eager to introduce the striking, exhilarating and German-engineered sedan at the earliest for the Indian market." said Ashish Gupta, Brand Director, Volkswagen Passenger Cars India.

The Volkswagen Virtus comes equipped with 2 engine and 3 gearbox options. While the 1.0-litre TSI is mated with a 6 speed manual or an optional 6 speed torque converter automatic gearbox, while the more powerful 1.5-litre TSI will only come equipped with a 7-speed DSG automatic gearbox. The 1.5-litre TSI also has premium features like cylinder deactivation tech, which significantly improves mileage in city stop-start traffic conditions. The compact sedan will be launched in May, while pre-bookings for the sedan have already commenced across Volkswagen's 151 sales touch points and the company's website.
