The new Maruti Suzuki Alto is set to make its debut soon with the model also expected to launch later this month. Ahead of this, the technical specifications for the all-new entry-level hatchback have been revealed through type approval documents. The new Alto is set to be longer and taller than the outgoing model and unlike its predecessors, it may drop the 800cc engine entirely.

Based on the documents, the new Alto will measure in at 3530mm long, 1490mm wide and 1520mm tall. The wheelbase meanwhile will sit at 2380mm. Compared to the current Alto, this would make it 85mm longer and 45mm taller though the width remains unchanged. The wheelbase too is up 20mm. The increased dimensions suggest that there could be more room in the cabin though with an unchanged width we will have to wait and see how the shoulder room inside is affected.
Coming to the weight, the document suggests a gross vehicle weight of 1150kg for the base model making it about 30kg lighter than the current base 800cc model. The new Alto is expected to be underpinned by Maruti’s Heartect platform.
Coming to the engine, Maruti is likely to pull the plug on the long-running 800cc engine with the new Alto expected to only be available in K10 spec. The type approval document reveals that the new Alto will get the K10C 1.0-litre DualJet engine good for 66 bhp at 5500 rpm – identical to other 1.0-litre DualJet equipped cars from the brand. Torque too is unlikely to be changed from the 89Nm offered in other models. A 5-speed manual gearbox will be standard with higher variant offered with an AMT option as well.
The new Alto is expected to be available in four variants – Standard (STD), LXi, VXi and VXi+ - with all four variants also available with an option pack. It however remains to be seen what will be offered as part of the option pack.
The Alto will go up against the likes of the Renault Kwid when it is launched.
