Suzuki looks set to be getting ready to launch a new electric scooter, as revealed in latest patent filings. But Suzuki's patent images show a somewhat different approach to the electric scooter. While the shape and silhouette of the new electric scooter looks pretty much similar to conventional scooters, the design seems to be slightly different. Electric scooters in this segment usually mount the engine and swingarm as a combined unit, or take the approach of mounting the electric motor on the hub of the rear wheel. Doing so, frees up space within the bike's chassis, making for luggage space, or for larger capacity batteries.

The electronics are mounted on top of the air-cooled electric motor, which will be housed in the underseat area
The latest patent designs however show a chain drive to the rear wheel, showing the drivetrain located in the underseat area, with the rest of the bike's electronics located on top of the motor, with the battery, speed controller and transformer. Although a little unconventional, the patent filing is said to describe the scooter using air-cooling, through inlet ducts, outlets and fans mounted within the body. How this makes the electric motor more efficient has not been detailed, and placing the electric motor out in the open would have likely provided the same results. Nevertheless, it's a system Suzuki seems to be exploring, and there will be some logic behind this design.

So far, a production timeline for the new electric scooter is not known, or where it will be launched eventually. What we do know is that Suzuki Motorcycle India is working on an electric version of the Burgman Street scooter in India, and that is likely to be the first Suzuki electric scooter which will be launched in India. Nevertheless, it's good to see Suzuki working on electric mobility, and it will be interesting to see what electric products show up in future.
