The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) today announced that the sale of passenger vehicles grew by 8.63 per cent in May 2017 over the same period last year. Within the Passenger Vehicles, Passenger Cars, Utility Vehicle and Vans grew by 4.80 per cent, 18.80 per cent and 9.50 per cent respectively in May 2017 over the same period last year. This is good news for the industry considering there were a host of launches in the past couple of months which include the likes of the Hyundai Xcent, Maruti Suzuki Dzire and even the Tata Tigor. As per the data provided by SIAM 1,66,630 passenger cars were sold in May, 2017, as compared to 1,58,996 units sold in May, 2016.
The Commercial vehicle segment declined by 14.40 percent in April-May 2017 as compared to the same period last year. The decline can be attributed to the ban of BS III vehicles in India from April 2017. Even the Medium & Heavy Commercial Vehicles (M&HCVs) declined by 43.63 percent, but the sales of light commercial vehicles grew by 8.28 percent in April-May 2017 over the same period last year.
The sales of three wheelers declined by 24.84 percent in April-May 2017 over the same period last year. Two Wheeler sales registered a growth at 9.58 percent in April-May 2017 over April-May 2016. The sales of scooters and motorcycles grew by 24.67 percent and 4.04 percent respectively, while Mopeds declined by 10.01 percent in April-May 2017 over April-May 2016. The consistent growth is a welcome one for the industry as both demonetisation and the BS-III ban had affected the two-wheeler and the heavy vehicles business in India.
