Maruti Suzuki was expected to make a big splash in the highly competitive light commercial vehicle (LCV) segment with the Super Carry last year, but its plans were postponed. Nevertheless, the made-in-India LCV has found its way to the South African market, where Suzuki Auto SA will launch the Super Carry in June this year. The India made LCV has been priced at 1,29,900 Rand (approx. Rs. 5.58 lakh).
The India made Maruti Super Carry is based on the Suzuki Super Carry sold overseas
The Suzuki Super Carry will be made and exported from Maruti Suzuki's domestic facility and is based on the Suzuki Super Carry sold in several Asian markets. The LCV measures 3.8-metres in length, 1.56 metres in width, while the loading bay measures 2.18 x 1.49 metres and has a payload capacity of up to 750 kg. The model comes with a ground clearance of 175mm, which will ensure uneven roads are hardly an issue.
The interiors remain a bare minimum on the Suzuki Super Carry
Suzuki South Africa is aiming to attract small business owners with the new Super Carry. The LCV's interiors remain basic with a three-spoke steering wheel, twin trays on the dashboard and a basic instrument cluster. There is a slot for an infotainment system, which we presume will be optional.
In terms of power, the Suzuki Super Carry will draw power from a 1.2-litre four-cylinder petrol engine in South Africa that is tuned to produce 72hp of power at 6000rpm and 101Nm of torque at 3000rpm. The motor comes paired to a 5-speed manual gearbox that sends power to the rear wheels. Suspension duties are performed by independent MacPherson struts up front, while the rear gets a rigid axle and leaf springs to handle the load.
The Super Carry's payload capacity stands at 750 kg
Keeping in mind the cost conscious customer base of the Super Carry, Suzuki is offering a three-year or 1,00,000 km warranty on the LCV, while it is also attributed as the most fuel efficient vehicle in its class by the company.
Suzuki SA will offer different cargo attachments for the Super Carry
Talking about its domestic launch, one can expect Maruti Suzuki to bring the Super Carry to the market later this year. While the 1.2-litre petrol motor will be offered with LPG/CNG variants, the 0.8-litre twin-cylinder diesel engine that made its debut on the Celerio last year will also power the LCV. Prices can be expected to commence around Rs. 4 lakh (ex-showroom) for the Super Carry, when it goes on sale.
