Like many other automakers, the Jeep brand also jumped into the electrification bandwagon as it introduced its first-ever electrified product, Jeep Renegade 4xe, and Jeep Compass 4xe plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, in 2020, followed by the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe last year. This is in line with the company's “zero-emission” SUV strategy that aims to add electrified versions, as well as offer 4xe plug-in hybrid versions in every category of its line-up by 2025. Now, the company is planning the same for the Indian market, but with a caveat. The American carmaker wants the Centre to consider reducing the tax on hybrid models, which currently is at 43 per cent (28 pe cent GST plus cess), making these alternately powered vehicles an expensive affair.

The Stellantis-owned American SUV maker retails its PHEVs under the 4xe range.
In a recent conversation with carandbike, Christian Meunier, CEO, of Jeep told us that the brand wants to introduce its 4xe plug-in-hybrid models in India, but the high tax rates of 43 per cent on PHEVs would make them an expensive proposition. Nevertheless, the company is optimistic and currently in talks with the concerned departments about the same.

Each Jeep plug-in hybrid vehicle carries a 4xe badge and is said to be the most fuel-efficient Jeep SUV ever. The 4xe technology offers a zero-emission drive and a line-up of new plug-in hybrid electric models providing range and easy charging. The new plug-in hybrid electric technology elevates the capability of the Jeep SUVs. On the one hand, it further increases off-road prowess, on the other, it enhances the on-road performance in everyday driving. The beginning of 2020 welcomed the launch of the "First Edition", the exclusive launch editions for both Jeep Renegade 4xe and Jeep Compass 4xe.

The Wrangler 4xe comes with 2.0-litre turbocharged I-4 engine that is paired with two electric motors and a 400-volt, 17-kilowatt-hour lithium-ion battery pack
Both Jeep Renegade 4xe and Compass 4xe pair a 1.3-litre turbo petrol engine with an electric motor located between the rear axle, which is powered by an 11.4 kWh battery that can be recharged while driving or through an external power outlet at home with the domestic plug. This engine delivers a power output of 130 bhp or 180 bhp, plus the 60 bhp produced by the electric motor, adding up to a total of 190 bhp or 240 bhp depending on the variant. In terms of torque, the electric motor produces 250 Nm, while the combustion engine delivers 270 Nm. This combination allows an acceleration from 0 to 100 kmph in around 7.5 seconds, a top speed of 130 kmph in fully electric, and up to 200 kmph in hybrid mode.
