Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India (HMSI) sold over 5.7 lakh two-wheelers in April 2017, achieving record sales growth for a single month. HMSI sales grew 34 per cent in a single month, with Honda scooters selling more than 3.5 lakh units - the first time this has happened in a single month. Honda scooter sales alone grew by a massive 40 per cent in April 2017. In the domestic market, over 1.8 lakh Honda motorcycles were sold in April 2017, a growth of 22 per cent.
Honda scooters and motorcycles combined sold over 5.5 lakh units in April, the first time so many Honda two-wheelers have been sold in a single month. With these numbers, Honda now claims a domestic market share of 33 per cent, crossing the 30 per cent mark for the first time. It's the highest ever market share HMSI has achieved yet.
"April 2017 results mark a great entry for Honda into the new financial year! Honda sold a total of 578,929 two-wheelers with phenomenal 34 per cent growth on the back of customer demand for Honda's upgraded BS-IV portfolio. Within segments, automatic scooter sales led the momentum with 40 per cent growth to cross 3.5 lac mark for first time ever (368,618 units) while motorcycles sales recorded robust 22 per cent growth. Not only domestic but exports of Honda 2Wheelers India also saw a jump of close to 60 per cent over April 2016," said Yadvinder Singh Guleria, Senior Vice President, Sales and Marketing, Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India.
HMSI recently also declared its mid-term business direction, setting an ambitious target of selling 60 lakh two-wheelers in FY2017-18. Scooter sales make up the majority of HMSI's sales, and recently Honda achieved a new milestone, manufacturing 1.5 crore Honda Activa scooters in India. The Activa was launched in 2001 and currently hold the distinction of the highest-selling two-wheeler, not only in India, but across the world. Honda's 125 cc motorcycle, the Honda CB Shine, also holds the distinction of being the highest-selling motorcycle in the world.
With the record sales numbers of over 5.7 lakh units in April, Honda is slowly inching closer to market leader Hero MotoCorp, which sold 5.9 lakh two-wheelers in April. Hero is the world's largest two-wheeler manufacturer by volume and is the undisputed leader in the Indian two-wheeler sales. In April 2017, however, Hero sales slipped by 3.4 per cent.
