Harley-Davidson is planning to unveil its new 1,250 cc liquid-cooled custom on July 13, 2021. The bike was first teased in concept form more than three years ago, and now, Harley-Davidson's official type-approval documents reveal the name of the upcoming Harley-Davidson. The new model will be called the Harley-Davidson Sportster S, and will be the successor to Harley-Davidson's long-running Sportster line featuring air-cooled twin engines with pushrods. Only this time around, the new Sportster S will feature a liquid-cooled, DOHC, twin derived from the same 1,252 cc engine of the Harley-Davidson Pan America 1250.

According to the type-approval documents, the model is officially referred to as RH1250S, which is in line with the H-D Pan America 1250 that shares its 1,252 cc Revolution Max engine. The adventure model's designations are RA1250 for the base model, and RA1250S for the Pan America 1250 Special. Harley-Davidson has already shown the Sportster S in concept form a few years ago, so the design is likely to be similar to the concept.

The engine may be essentially the same Revolution Max 1250 design used in the Pan America 1250, but for the Sportster S, it will be detuned from the Pan America's 150 bhp to around 121 bhp. The engine will also have a lower redline, so the Pan America's variable valve timing system may not be used on the Sportster S. So, the new bike's maximum power output is achieved at 7,500 rpm instead of over 8,500 rpm on the Pan America. Torque is also reduced, with the Sportster S managing to put out 125 Nm at 6,000 rpm, while on the Pan America 1250, the Revolution Max engine has peak torque of 127 Nm at 6,750 rpm.

Despite the marginally lower power and torque, the type-approval documents list the Sportster S as having a maximum speed of 220 kmph, but with torque peaking earlier and having a lower kerb weight than the Pan America, the Sportster S should be a quicker bike in real-world city dashes. More details will be revealed on July 13 when Harley-Davidson will unveil the new Sportster S.
